our world values strange things. apparently tasty milk is not amongst them.
these two. elvis & lola. such lovebugs. but such trouble. how do you convince a maremma not to howl at the moon? to hoot with the owl? to cry with the beavers over breakfast? to sense danger in the melting of snow? really. do you know?
and this. this is the level of crust on our snow currently. these two 80 lb dogs can float on the surface.
also those birch trees. they are dead, but i wish they weren’t.
We were icey before. All chores would be better accomplished on ice skates. But now. After a serious night of pounding ice pellets, it is fair to say that everything is iced. A thick layer. And the level of contrast in the sky. its extremely minimal. one shade of grey. so i’ve got my fingers crossed for a little sunshine tomorrow. for if there is one thing about an ice storm. it is the next day, the sun lighting up all the icicles, the narnia effect, that makes you alive again. this video is from the morning after a soft fluffy october snow. the big one right before halloween where all the animals ran out of their pastures and drove us crazy.
also. since i had cooked and cleaned us a feast last night, lucas did all of the chores this morning while I lay in bed, listening to the rain. he deserves a medal.
Since 1970, the average temperature in New England has risen 2 degrees Fahrenheit, with average winter temperatures rising twice as fast — 4 degrees between 1970 and 2000. That’s according to Alan Betts, an atmospheric researcher from Pittford, Vt.
Precipitation in Vermont has also increased by as much as 20 percent, with more of it arriving as rain and less as snow. Overall, Betts warns Vermonters to expect rainier winters, earlier springs, hotter summers, longer and more persistent droughts, and heavier and more frequent and torrential “extreme” weather events such as Tropical Storm Irene.

Louisa and her Goats, 30 x 40, oil on linen
Home in NYC for the weekend while Lucas tends farm. Awoke to the same rumbling of snow trucks we are used to on peaked mountain rattling our barn. Snow surely feels different from a 12th story window.

This Map Shows Where All The Trees Are In The US
NASA’s Earth Observatory just released a map illustrating where all the trees are in America. The map was created over six years by Josef Kellndorfer and Wayne Walker of the Woods Hole Research Center (WHRC) in collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Geological Survey. The dark swaths of green represent parts of the country with the greatest concentration of biomass. You can see dense tree cover in the Pacific Northwest as well New England, which has been reforested after intensive logging in the 18th and 19th centuries.
I made these truffles over the weekend, except I substituted with goat cream and goat butter, as I have more of that lying around. SO. Delicious. I know, I know it is January and everyone is cleaning and eating peas and feeling great, but these are amazing. And I made them by melting down some chocolate santas, so really, I was recycling.
