THIS IS YOUR ANIMAL
for Frances & Jon on their wedding day
Ahmic Lake – July 28, 2012
And while it may not appear in an Audobon sketch
or bare it’s teeth in the pages of an encyclopedia, or sit still
long enough for those in lab coats to observe its behavior, or decipher
the unique language that it speaks (for it speaks)
And while it may, at times, appear to lie dormant,
having wandered off independently into the feathered
green. Along a water’s edge. Guided by a distant dream.
Toward that blue beneath the blue.
This animal, of which I speak, of which you two, together,
impart, & give rise to –
It is of your making. It is of your making alone.
That is, this is: YOUR ANIMAL
And here, in this place, let us witness it breathing, let us celebrate
on these rocks it’s gathering into being
—a journey’s beginning—
& let it impress upon us the very signs of its presence:
a dazzling of light in a spontaneous ripple,
water’s melodious lapping of an otherwise silent shore,
A sunset threading itself singly
through a company of hearts.
Wind in the trees.
