As an artist, Caitlin Freeman found her calling in cake.

She bakes at the cafe in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, where the most popular item is a dessert inspired by the art of Piet Mondrian. It features geometric blocks of white velvet cake, colored red, blue and yellow, stacked together and “glued” with chocolate. It takes two days to prepare, according to her new cookbook, Modern Art Desserts.

Lucas & I have spent a combined 22 winters in Vermont. Obviously, I dont mind a little winter. But I will say this one has got to end. I had nightmares about three inches of snow last night. As in, the snow was scary. Really I just want the goats out of the barnyard. Please spring, please.

Map of significant climate events in 2012. Usually we think in terms of one event to the next. We name that event (Katrina, Nemo, etc.) and move on to the clean up phase. But collectively, when seen in one snap shot of an entire year, I cannot help but think we are in big, big trouble. Governments cannot possibly manage all this strife, year after year, decade after decade. Something has got to give, or possibly collapse. Sorry for the doom reflection, but sheesh. Look at all these big events. So much life lost. Such high costs to taxpayers.
